Chai Ice Cubes
Let me paint a picture for you: You really want an iced chai so you go over to the stove, you make your chai and you’ve got your cup full of ice cubes ready for you to just pour it over.
As you strain the chai over the ice cubes, you watch in terror as you see the ice cubes just melts away against the hot chai and turn into a watery mess.
You were so excited for this chai and really wanted it iced, however it is now mostly watery and you can’t taste the flavors anymore.
I’ve been there, it’s really disappointing to have your chai all watered down.
The fix for that is what I’m gonna show you today! I came across an interesting method for iced coffee where they freeze the coffee in ice cube molds and then pour the coffee over that so when the cubes melt keep your drink cold but you don’t get the watery flavor.
I saw this and thought to myself, why can’t we do this with chai? And so this post was born.
I grabbed an ice cube tray from target and immediately got to work figuring this out.
One thing I had to consider was do I freeze the milk or do I freeze the chai?
I had come across a video of a tea lover on TikTok and she had tried freezing her matcha then pouring cold milk over it. The problem she ran into was she ended up drinking straight up cold milk for hours until the matcha cubes actually melted... I wanted to make sure I avoided this problem.
So what I did was I decided to freeze some of my homemade chai concentrate ( you can check that out here ) in the ice cube tray. When that was done I made a fresh cup of chai using my chai concentrate poured over an equal amount of milk and used the chai concentrate ice cubes in place of normal ice cubes.
Because I already had Chai in there and added the chai ice cubes in, this made sure that I wasn’t drinking cold milk, and also it was really good because it was like a bottomless cup of chai! Every time I was getting low, another cube would melt a little bit more and release some more chai.
Alternatively you could make a hot chai and pour this over the chai ice cubes as well but keep in mind do you want to use the same stuff in the chai ice cubes as the chai you’re going to pour over them otherwise you’ll get clashing flavors as the cubes melt.
Here’s a simple breakdown of how to do my chai ice cubes
Make homemade chai concentrate
Pour into ice cube tray
When ready to have a chai please chai concentrate cubes into glass, then pour equal parts concentrate and milk into a cup
Enjoy iced chai without getting it watered down
I absolutely love these chai ice cubes and will continue to make them and use them!
This is one of my favorite life hacks ever and I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I do.
