Dirty Chai Dalgona Coffee Recipe
Imagine if you could combine coffee and chai. No wait, make that even better, whipped coffee ( DALGONA COFFEE) and chai.
Let me take you back in time for a moment:
Ah yes… the beginning of quarantine vibes…
Everyone thinking this craziness will be over in a just a month or so, the crazy supermarkets, binging tv shows, and last but certainly not least, the dalgona coffee craze.
Now I know what you’re thinking: this is a chai blog, and this is a coffee trend? Stay in your lane!
That is why today I’m going to share with you a combination of two amazing things: dalgona coffee and chai. Introducing the Dirty Chai Dalgona Coffee Recipe! Perfect for coffee lovers and chai lovers alike. Pin this to your pinterest boards folks because you’re going to want to save this!!!
This was so delicious that when I gave this to my family every single one of them loved the flavor and said they would pay to order this at a coffee shop (including my mom who doesn’t even drink chai). That good!
When I was making this I used some of my amazing homemade chai concentrate (be sure to check out that recipe if you haven’t already) but you can use whatever chai you like! I just really really like the homemade one so that’s what I used in mine.
First let’s talk about what exactly dalgona coffee is.
What is Dalgona Coffee?
Out of all the coffee trends over the years, this has got to be my favorite. Dalgona coffee has been around for a very long time in multiple countries. There are many different names for it depending on the region.
According to Food Network Magazine (October 2020) “in India phenti hui is a hot beaten drink in which milk is poured over coffee”.
So what is the difference between phenti hui and dalgona coffee? Well, dalgona coffee is typically served on top of iced milk while phenti hui is served hot and with the whipped coffee mixed into it. There isn’t much difference!
What is dirty chai?
A “dirty chai” is simply just chai with espresso/coffee in it.
So now that we understand what it is, let’s get to the recipe.
Dirty Chai Dalgona Coffee Recipe
This is actually ridiculously simple, anyone can make it and it will be your new favorite drink!
This recipe makes about one serving, although you may have extra whipped coffee topping depending on the size of your cup.
Ingredients
Homemade Chai Concentrate or Your favorite Chai
Ice
Milk
White Sugar
Instant espresso/coffee ( This is the one I used )
Boiling water
You’ll also need an electric hand mixer if you want this to go faster. You can of course whisk by hand but that will take much longer to reach the desired consistency.
Instructions
In a small bowl, place 2 tablespoons of sugar, 2 tablespoons of instant coffee/espresso, and 2 tablespoons of boiling hot water.
Here’s the key to making this easier: let the water sit and absorb in the bowl for a minute.
Grab your electric hand mixer (or whisk by hand) and mix on high for a few minutes.
**You’re going to watch the coffee mixture go through a foamy phase (lots of bubbles), then a frothy phase (a more solid dark brown), then keep mixing as it reaches its thicker & lighter phase. Keep mixing until it’s thick and creamy. You should be able to create peaks and when holding it on a spoon it should not slide off too quickly.
Grab your cup and fill with ice.
If using concentrate, pour half milk (or milk substitute) and half concentrate over ice. If using your favorite chai that already has milk in it, simply pour over ice.
Taking a spoon, add the whipped coffee to the top of the chai. Add a good amount.
Admire the beautiful dalgona chai coffee and snap a few pictures to make your friends jealous.
When ready to enjoy, either drink it with the whipped coffee on top or mix the coffee into the chai below (my preference).
