First off , I’d like to thank Tipu’s for sending me chai to taste and review. I will be reviewing the other flavors in future posts.
Today’s review is going to be on Tipu’s Original Slow Brew Chai. Now I know what you’re thinking, especially if you read my last review… What makes this one different?
The concept of the Slow Brew Chai is that it takes a bit longer than their blends in the Chai Now line, and the added time it takes to bring the mixture up to a boil several times is supposed to add to the flavor.
For this Slow Brew, you add the milk, water, and sweetener yourself. The instructions on the back of the box calls for 2 rounded tablespoons of sugar, but I found personally that amount was too sweet for me, so I went for about 1 1/2 tablespoons. You can use whatever milk you like with this chai, as this mix is vegan!
This mix comes loose in a foil package, and each box makes about 25 servings. They recommend you add fresh ginger to the chai to kick it up a notch.
Because this is a slow brew, it does take a bit longer and is for those occasions where you can take the extra time to really steep the tea and spices together.
To make this chai, you bring the water + tea up to a boil then simmer for 3 minutes, then after that’s done you add in your milk + sweetener and bring to a boil once again and then simmer for another 3 minutes. After that you strain it and if you like, pour over ice or have it hot.
It smells nice and spicy, which is something Tipu’s takes pride in, their organic spices.
Taste-wise, this isn’t as spicy as the Chai Now Sweetened Masala Chai, but one difference between these two blends is that the Chai Now dissolves into your drink, whereas this Slow Brew requires straining.
That being said, there is a more subtle spice that rests on your tongue that resembles cinnamon (not sure if there is cinnamon in this mix, but it feels like cinnamon). If you don’t like ginger, this chai is great for you because it doesn’t have a gingery taste like many other chais, so it’s optional to throw that in there.
The spice is so toned down that it’s barely noticeable. The tea takes the leading flavor.
Overall this is a pretty muted chai, for those who have a little more time and don’t like a lot of spice. I likely won’t be buying this particular blend, because I like something a bit more bold, but if you want a nice mellow chai you can buy this on Amazon here for $12.49 .
