Firepot reached out to me via instagram message (@itrychai) and sent me some of their teas to try out! Firepot is a women-owned tea company. They believe in the connection between tea and health + wellness. Firepot donates 1% of their sales to One Percent for the Planet, an organization of businesses that value and contribute to environmental sustainability.
Going along on that note, their packaging is minimal and compostable (yay!), and sustainability is definitely one of their core values.
Their masala chai comes in a 3 ounce tin, which costs $7.99. One tin makes up to 34 cups, making this a really great price for the amount!
Opening up the tin, you can see the spices are finely ground, but now powdery. They use Fair Trade Rwandan black tea, which they claim is “the world’s best tea for chai”.
While their masala chai is caffeinated, if you prefer something with less buzz they offer a Rooibos chai which is caffeine-free (review on that coming soon).
To make this chai, you boil milk/milk alternative and water along with the spices then simmer for 5 minutes, making this a relatively quick chai to make. After that strain and add the sweetener of choice.
Recommended sweetener: Brown Sugar
Recommended alternative milk: Oat Milk (I used Planet Oat’s Extra Creamy Original Oat Milk)
Using the recommended amount of chai mix and sugar, it’s time to taste. The first thing that I notice is how smooth it is. It doesn’t taste watery, but it holds it’s own weight, and is almost silky.
This isn’t a spicy chai, but it has the chai flavor you’d expect. The suggested amount of sweetener makes for a perfect ratio (not overly sweet, but just enough).
If I had to describe this chai shortly I would say it’s a “crowd pleaser”. This is a chai you can give to anyone and they’ll like it! Like I mentioned before, it has the chai flavor that should be present in every chai, but it’s not spicy so it’s very appealing to many different palettes. When I made my latest batch, I gave some to my 9 year old brother, and he liked it (even though he doesn’t drink chai)!
